A Christmas morning tradition from the Shumways.
Ingredients
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 yeast dissolved in 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cube butter
- 1 egg slightly beaten
- 3 TB sugar
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 3/4 cup flour
Directions
Bring buttermilk just to boiling. Add butter, sugar and salt. Pour mixture into mixing bowl; add egg and yeast/water mixture. Blend together. Mix in soda and flour (Dough will be soft) Put dough on wax paper and invert bowl over dough for 15 minutes. Roll out on floured board into large rectangle. Butter dough and sprinkle on filling.
Filling
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Fold dough in half and cut into 1/2 inch strips and twist. Place on greased cookie sheet and cover. Let rise 45 minutes. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.
Frosting
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 TB melted butter
- 3-4 TB hot water
- Almond flavoring (a little)
Variation
- Add orange rind and orange juice instead of Almond flavoring
